A friend and colleague is a leader in Kaiser Permanente's national Community Benefits program. He and I have worked with others for over four years to grow our food system work. He has a nine-year-old son who is taking on new family responsibilities like shopping for basics on his own at a local grocery store in Oakland. When he was asked to bring home butter and lowfat milk recently, he said "Dad, should I make sure it's local?" Proud of himself when returning home he showed off milk from Berkeley Farms dairy. (Berkeley is next door to Oakland). It's good to start young.
