You've heard a lot talk about food miles. This link to a major report done in the UK is a portal to a wealth of information and ideas. Thinking only about how far food traveled to get to your plate doesn't take into account all the other factors. This report discussed many of those -- the mode of transport, etc. Be forewarned that lurking behind this link is a LOT of information and a lot of Food for Thought.
